What Is Vetting?

Vetting is a more detailed, in-depth background investigation carried out once a candidate has passed initial screening.

It assesses whether someone is suitable, trustworthy, and safe to be employed—especially in roles involving sensitive information, vulnerable groups, or national security.

Vetting may include:

  • Criminal record checks (DBS)
  • Reference checks
  • Employment history verification
  • Financial/credit checks
  • Checks of overseas activity/residence (if required)

Vetting is risk-based and used only when the role justifies it—for example, working with children, handling classified information, managing financial assets, or within the Security Industry.
